23 years after their last record, three old members of Stackridge have reunited and made a record containing 14 brand new songs. Only bassist Crun Walter remains from the group who made Mr. Mick in 1976, while the two previous members James Warren (guitar/vocals) and Mike Evans (violin) completes the line-up. Together they present a bunch of subtle and elegant songs that sound as if they might have been recorded directly after Mr. Mick.
James Warren has written the major bulk of the material and he is also the vocalist on most of the tracks. The voice which gave us such highlights as Anyone For Tennis and Amazingly Agnes doesnt sound a day older, and the band is polished and self-secure. Musically much of the stuff is in Paul McCartney-country with a dash of Music Hall, a bit of bluegrass and a bit unclassifiable. Two of the highlights are the Lewis Carrol-ish Wildebeeste and the very catchy Something About The Beatles.
Stackridge has released a relatively harmless record, but contrary to a lot of other 70s reunion bands, they still sound fresh and youthful, and the sound and production is top notch. They prove that they can still write distinctive compositions, and they can perform them with a high grade of professionalism. Something For The Weekend is a fine addition to your Stackridge-collection.
