Its a good while since Sonja Kristina was fronting Curved Air, and on this CD, recorded in 1991, we find her as the title indicates in a somewhat different setting than progressive rock. Well, this kind of repertoire has not been totally unknown to Sonja Kristina, her own songs from the Curved Air period has a lot in common with this selection, something proven by the inclusion of both "Melinda More Or Less" (from "Phantasmagoria") and "Back Street Luv (from "2nd Album").
It is mainly acoustic music with violin and cello in prominent roles, but with a hectic rhythm section, a combination they called "Acid Folk". Sonjas emotional, almost hypnotic voice interprets these at times very personal songs with great intensity and individuality. She puts her personal stamp on everything she sings, so even if not all the compositions are equally strong (at lest from a progressive rock point of view), the interpretation alone makes this a very worthwhile listening. Her band is also very competent, made up of young London-based musicians playing psychedelic rock in the late 80s.
With her close relationship with British folk rock, Sonja Kristina fits perfectly beside distinctive singers like Sandy Denny, Shirley Collins, Maddy Prior, Cathy Lesurf and Linda Thompson, to mention just a few.
