The multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer Phideaux Xavier and his troup of musicias, "Phideaux", is here with his fifth release, which at the same time is the first work in a projected trilogy aimed at elements in our world such as emvironmeltal problems and untimely use of surveillance technology. Later this year, the group has announced release number two in the trilogy, an album to be called "Doomsday Afternoon". Well, the ensemble definitelt got this listener hooked.

The album is split unto two "sides", like a vinyl record. According to Xavier, this is done in order to create a natural split in the musical drama where side 1 describes various unfortunate conditions in the world, while "side 2" represents the door into the world of oblivion. Whetheror not the music itself manages to pass on the gloomy message or the lyrics are capable of enlightening the various problems, is up tp each listener to decide. This is interpretation material, but in my opinion, both music and lyrics are thoroughly worked out, structured and coherent. I will not comment on the record in a conceptual context, but try to explain the total impression of the music.

It starts with a rather rough Leppard/Bowie symbiosis followed by a textual material which indicates the apathy of the common man towards the threatening dangers. Well executed advanced rock music from the point of view of an old "rocker" from the 60s with his legs well planted in the 70s (and who even thought "Civilian" was a step in the right direction!). The remaining tracks on "side 1" represent Phideaux' more traditional melodic side with various exotic instruments and tasteful arrangements.

"Side 2" differs from the first side in that the melodies are more attuned to each other. The music appears more Yes/Floyd inspired, mixed with a folkish sound and psychedelia. This strengtens the group's characteristics the way it has been manifested in previous records.

Phideaux is pop music, but a very advanced pop music, and I can only agree with what has been written about them previously in this magazine: "Phideaux is a band with both talent and and ideas, something sadly missing in much of today's music. Give them a chance!".
